What is a fractional CTO?
And when does it make sense?
A fractional CTO is part-time technical leadership: the same responsibility and overview as a full-time CTO, bought as a service instead of an employment. For owner-led Shopify stores, it’s typically the answer once a freelancer is no longer enough but a full-time hire can’t be justified.
// 01Definition
What a fractional CTO actually does
The title sounds abstract. The work is concrete.
Owns the technical whole
While freelancers and agencies solve individual tickets, it’s the fractional CTO’s job to make sure the theme, apps, integrations and tracking still fit together once five projects have been stacked on top of each other.
Sets direction before anyone codes
Prioritises the roadmap, judges which problems actually need development, and which are a tracking or process problem in disguise.
Is the link to developers and agencies
Reviews quotes, quality-checks deliverables, and speaks the same language as your external developers, so you don’t have to translate between tech and business yourself.
Builds it themselves when that’s faster
An advisor stops at the recommendation. A fractional CTO who still writes code can fix the bug or set up the tracking themselves, instead of adding it to someone else’s to-do list.
// 02The difference
Fractional CTO vs. consultant vs. agency
Three different roles that often get mixed up.
vs. Consultant
A consultant hands over a report and moves on to the next client. A fractional CTO stays, and is there when the recommendation meets reality and something needs fixing.
vs. Agency
An agency sells hours on its own deliverables. A fractional CTO sits on your side of the table, including when the job is judging whether the agency’s quote and work are reasonable.
vs. Full-time CTO
Same responsibility, without recruitment, pension or a notice period. You pay for the number of days your business actually needs, and can cancel with a month’s notice.
